About the Author

M ARCELINE BONGKISHIY is the founder of Health Improvement Initiative, HIIT, a Non-Governmental Organization dedicated to creating awareness about preventive health ailments with a primary aim to eradicate infertility caused by iron deficiency anaemia. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and Social Sciences from the University of Dschang, Cameroon, her desire to effect a change in her environment motivated her to pursue a Master’s degree in Public Health from Umea International School of Public Health, Sweden.

Using her life challenges as a foundation for her messages, she is invested in taking her campaign awareness to every corner of Africa and other ethnic minorities to ensure a better quality of life for the people.

Four years before HIIT was officially registered in Germany, its first awareness and sensitization campaign was held in Cameroon in 2014. Since then, Marceline has seized every opportunity to propagate her timely messages.

The public health specialist and social entrepreneur has spoken at several international events―Global Health Catalyst Summit (GHC) at the Harvard Medical School and Women in Tech Africa amongst others―on her personal experience with Iron Deficiency Anaemia, infertility and the work she is currently doing through HIIT.

She believes that ‘health is wealth’, and that everybody, especially women, needs to be healthy, happy and live a fulfilled life. The people who attend her workshops, seminars and yearly health events include medical doctors, engineers, aspiring entrepreneurs, professionals and non-professionals that gather to learn from shared experiences.

Marceline loves sports, reading and travelling. From Pain to Purpose is her first published book.

She lives in Germany with her husband and their two children.

About the Book

From Pain to Purpose is a memoir that chronicles the author’s life’s journey through challenging experiences. Like gold being purified by fire, the author’s story of becoming, passed through crooked and rough roads littered with sexual harassment, undiagnosed health ailments and infertility.

This book aims to discourage readily accepting certain situations as being a part of life, educate about the dangers of self-diagnosis, motivate readers on a self-examination exercise of the pains they once lived with or still live with, to uncover the purposes buried therein.

Most importantly, From Pain to Purpose is a documentation of the author’s fight with Iron Deficiency Anaemia―the primary source of her infertility―her victory and how she turned her struggles (Pain) into a message of hope (Purpose) to many others.

Reviews

“In this debut book that grips you from the first page, Marceline shares her unique and deeply compelling coming of age story with us. The geniality of the story is how it weaves in indicators of the latent effects of the hidden, chronic iron deficiency anaemia battle that many are facing, without being aware of it. Marceline´s story shows how we can normalize and accept health conditions with bad outcomes, health conditions that can be easily treated. This book details Marceline´s journey from pain to self awareness, to stability and finally to purpose, spanning over 3 countries.I have been privileged to be closely involved with HIIT and Marceline is a dear friend, so I have been privileged to hear her story many times before. In Spite of that, I learned a lot more about my friend, and about Iron deficiency anaemia from the book Pain to purpose. It opened my eyes on a deeper level to what lies behind Marceline´s passion to educate people and debunk wrong beliefs and mindsets. Thank you for putting Pen to paper Marceline. I highly recommend the book! ”

“This is about the Amazing Grace of God in the author's life when she had all but given up on ever becoming a Mother. Isn't this every young African girl's dream? It was mine too. But the author had to experience, acknowledge and dare defy so much pain to get her dream come true. God gave her her heart's desire after reminding her again and again through various signs and visions, that all she got as life's lessons were not to be in vain. That's how Pain become Purpose. This book will shed light on so much including the author's own personality, and it will challenge us about taking life for granted and living it without purpose if that's our reality.”

“From Pain to Purpose is a beautiful, crafted story, it takes one from the distant lands of Cameroon, with its fancy healthcare system, to self-diagnosis. The novel dances through the African University system, its challenges and lands one in the shores of Europe. It presents at first hand experience the dangers of assumption and common treatment of ill-health while suffering a life-threatening disease. It challenges the nomadic norm of African Marriages, the responsibilities of the partners in a marriage and the vision of holding on.This novel encourages one to the belief that a challenge is designed for one’s growth and development. It gives birth to hope and crystal light at the end of the tunnel. As it says, it is a journey from Pain to Purpose. Reading the book, you will feel enthralled in her story and be taken along in her journey towards a purpose; perhaps an incandescence may occur and you will find your purpose too.I highly recommend this book”

“From Pain to Purpose is the author´s story of her transition from a life of constant unexplainable pain to a greater purpose. In a chatty style of writing, Marceline takes us through her life as a teenager and young adult dealing with Iron Deficiency Anaemia while studying. We follow her story into adulthood, marriage and motherhood and see all the challenges along the way.The best part of this book is discovering how she found purpose and shows others how to do the same with practical guidance and motivation.”
